Bars with jaw-dropping views are far from novel in Dubai these days. There’s hardly a hotel in the city without a cloud-skimming sky lounge complete with floor to ceiling windows. But, despite the ubiquity of the bar with a view, this doesn’t detract from the fact that few sights compare to that of this compelling, constantly growing city glittering as the sky darkens over it. And nothing compares to soaking it all in with a perfectly mixed drink in hand. As they know very well at Eclipse, if you keep offering superior beverages and spectacular views then the punters will keep coming. The bar is perched high above the hustle and bustle of Dubai Festival City, right up on the 26th floor of the Intercontinental, whose architecture was inspired by a sailing boat and which sits on the banks of the Dubai Creek. The bar itself has a retro, eighties feel, with lots of chrome and super-plush carpets. The look may be a little dated for some tastes, but the view’s the main deal here, and that certainly can’t be faulted. Bar snacks are superior specimens and there’s an excellent selection of champagnes available by both the bottle and glass. The air-con can be a bit fierce but the ever so obliging staff are on hand to dispense cosy pashminas if you’re feeling a bit chilly. And they’ll bring a table lamp too if you struggle to read the menu in the artfully low lighting now that really is service.
