Another Jumeirah gem, this one a swanky, multi-level club-bar with live music, DJs and a roomy, hi-tech dance floor in the Royal Mirage resort. The music is a mix of Arabic and Western tunes but we’re certainly not going to make any corny “Rock the Kasbah” references: you’re as likely to hear Natasha Atlas in here as The Clash. Live bands play until midnight when DJs take over and your entrance fee gains you a classic cocktail on the house. The upper two floors boast ornate terraces overlooking the action below, while the lounge decor is all oil lamps, floor cushions and low tables. They’ve even thoughtfully provided bar games along the counter for those who’d rather chill out with friends than shake their thing on the dance-floor. Take a seat with a view of the stage in the main room with its thick drapes, Moroccan tiles and exotic North African ambience and imagine you’re in Marrakech, or call ahead to reserve a table on the mezzanine where you can soak in the atmosphere from on high. It can be a bit hit and miss one night the place will be heaving and the next all but deserted but on a good night, when the dance-floor really heats up, it’s hard to beat. A favourite with both locals and expats, the DJs here certainly know how to keep the party going. The Mirage is one of South African tycoon Sol Kerzner’s babies so if you like the Lost City you’ll be bowled over by this.
