This shiny glass and concrete box on the George IV Bridge in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town was formerly home to the Hotel Missoni, one of the city’s most glamorous hotels. The building has now been transformed into the G&V hotel and it remains a striking modern space, contemporary in design, luxurious and urban, a marked contrast to the old stone of the nearby Royal Mile. The hotel’s bar is similarly modern and stylish. The G&V Bar occupies the space at the front of the hotel, and boasts bold teal walls, colourful art (we are particularly taken with the phases on the moon photographs), dark wood floors and a scattering of comfy polka-dotted chairs. It remains a fashionable spot for relaxing with a cocktail or a glass of fizz after a day’s sight-seeing or a place of respite from the glorious scrum of the Edinburgh Fringe which overtakes the city every August. From the drinks list, an Aria di Primavera cocktail – their take on the raspberry Bellini – is a refreshing treat, as is the Key Lime Pie, a boozy riff on the classic dessert.
