Though relatively new, having opened in 2008, Hamburg’s George Hotel exudes an old fashioned elegance. The interiors have been given a classic British look which means, in practice, an abundance of polished oak floors, the occasional splash of shag carpeting, bold Regency style wallpaper and lots of deep, rich leather: not unlike a gentlemen’s club with a contemporary European twist. This homage to England and the English extends to the bar, a sleek, dark, attractive space with an appealingly thick drinks list. Thankfully this is no cheesy theme pub rather it’s a sophisticated space in which to sip a cocktail before hitting the streets of Hamburg. They also stock an admirable range of whiskies and other spirits should you be in the mood for a night cap before retiring to your room. The George is also home to the Campari Lounge, a seventh floor roof terrace where you can partake of an aperitif and some antipasti while looking out over the city’s rooftops.
