Back in the 50s Havana’s most famous hotel was second home to every visiting American star and gangster. These days it’s back to its glorious best – a classical Mediterranean-style hotel with ocean views, a spectacular pool, three restaurants and two classy drinking spaces. Around the ground-floor garden terrace, staff in immaculate white uniforms deliver strong, sweet pina coladas to wealthy, tanned tourists sitting on rattan chairs, while son bands serenade them and peacocks flit between the palm trees. The cigar bar inside meanwhile has pictures of every star who has drunk in here since the 30s and a big rum selection. And don’t be surprised to see the likes of N. Campbell or K. Moss flounce through in their summer dresses.
