There are times where only a stiff drink and a well-stuffed armchair will do. On these occasions, there’s only one sensible place to go in Helsinki: the American Bar in the city’s landmark Hotel Torni. Elegant in an old-school way with its semi-circular bar and refined feel, this upscale watering hole offers exactly what it says on the tin since opening back in 1960, it remains the closest thing you’ll find to an American style cocktail lounge in Helsinki. One of three bars in the heritage hotel (cute cocktail bar Ateljee boasts terrific views from its 14th floor perch, while you’ll find Irish pub O’Malleys spilling onto the ground floor terrace), American Bar is the perfect pre-dinner pit stop, a stylish place to settle for an hour so. On the drinks list, you’ll find a good range of European wines and fizz on offer as well as several beers, classic cocktails, and an exhaustive array of whiskeys. If you can’t resist some nibbles, there are small bites, cheese plates and club sandwiches available, too. Prices are slightly inflated here compared to an average Helsinki bar, but if anything it only helps to separate the gentlemen from the boys: the atmosphere here is wholly grown up, and service is impeccable. And as American Bar is considered in local mixology circles to be somewhat of a university for bartenders, your order will certainly be in good hands. The clincher? In classic New York style, there’s also live piano music here some evenings.
