In Helsinki it might usually be (very) cold outside, but it’s forever summer inside the funky Cuba Café. Below the venue’s red neon sign, you will find this city bar splashed in bright green and fiery orange hues it’s like a slice of Havana in the middle of Scandinavia, and you can’t help but feel like you’ve been transported to the emerald isles of the Caribbean when you step inside. If you’re not drunk yet, you can be forgiven for dismissing Cuba Café as a tatty party bar (the scuffed floors, chipped tables and gaudy paint job might look a bit sad to the discerning eye) but this place positively fizzes with action as the night warms up. Firstly, there’s the drinks: there’s beer, of course, but true to its name, Cuba! Cafe also offers twelve kinds of Mojitos. It’s difficult to go past the classic recipe, but the blueberry one is totally worth your time, and the chilli-laced concoction will totally blow your mind. Add to this frequent live music from an eclectic line-up of local bands (who share Cuba! Café’s small stage with an Old Havana-style taxi) and you’ve got yourself a pretty memorable night in the making. As long as you’re not expecting salsa, that is in Helsinki, Euro-pop reigns king, and the young locals that frequent this joint are more than happy to dance along to the latest hits here. For special events, an equally colourful private party room out back is also available for hire.
