Above & Beyond

For non guests, Above & Beyond operates mostly as a top-notch Chinese restaurant in this Kowloon side hotel. It features a menu of dim sum and Cantonese classics that match the delectable harbour views. But set somewhat apart from the white tablecloths and other accoutrements of the smart modern restaurant is a Terrance Conran designed bar, a little reminiscent of a First Class airline lounge in style and mood. It’s own panoramic views from the 28th floor are augmented by the cocktails on offer. Some of the standout signature drinks have spacey names: the Polaris could catapult you into orbit with its mix of vodka, pineapple juice, lychee and refreshing cucumber juice, but the brightest light in the bar’s cocktail universe is the Galaxy, a blend of vodka, chambord, cointreau, champagne and cranberry juice. To keep you grounded, dim sum snacks are available as little parcels of happiness for your stomach. If you tire of the vertiginous views the bar has plenty of character; paintings from local artists adorn the walls. There is also a selection of art books and Asian artifacts lining copious bookshelves. While a nice place to get some work done with a drink or two to hand, the library feel doesn’t extend to the atmosphere where there’s often a refined clinetele gathering for pre-dinner drinks or post-prandial pleasures.
