Hidden behind the bustling streets of Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district, Djiboutii bills itself as a relaxing sanctuary that just happens to double as a cocktail bar serving high quality, fresh and healthy food. It’s definitely an ambitious combination, but one Djiboutii manages to pull off flawlessly. Djiboutii is definitely a hidden bar, but not in the speakeasy sense of the word, it just happens to lie down an alley in one of the most frenetic areas of Hong Kong. When you do find the address of this oasis, you’ll be immediately struck by the decor that gives a nod to both the exotic name of the bar and the utmost of modern style. Sultry pastel purple lights, vintage furniture, and jungle prints result in a ‘safari lodge meets posh second hand boutique’ type of atmosphere. Djiboutii is an intimate space no doubt, with a large section of the venue spilling out on to the alley, making for another interesting twist to the ambiance and quite the feature during pleasant weather. You came for the cocktails, and when it’s time to tip them back, Djiboutii presents some creative mixes, many featuring house-infused premium teas from all over the world. Examples include the Montego Fever – premium dark rum, chai tea, bitters, and Aztec chocolate bitters peach jam – Djiblutea – lavender-infused vodka, blueberries, cacao, citrus, and cranberry tea – and The Republic – vanilla and cherry infused vodka, sour cherry puree, grapefruit juice, and frothy egg white. Djiboutii’s food menu is fresh, Mediterranean-flavoured, and goes perfectly with the cocktails.
