The Optimist in Hong Kong likes to downplay the breadth of what they do by just cheekily saying “we grill things”. Well, they certainly do grill things up here, but they also specialize in a whole lot more, and the exquisite total package makes The Optimist one of Hong Kong’s hottest bar/restaurants.
Sprawling out over three decadently-decorated floors in the heart of town, The Optimist is a ‘Barcelona chic’ bar, which scores an ‘A’ for authenticity. From the moment you step in, you are taken to Northern Spain, with vibrant tiles, hanging greens, luxurious brown leather seating, and a metal arch over the bar, bringing to mind a colorful Spanish market. The food is heavy on towers of fresh grilled seafood, grilled prime meats, and sizzling sharing dishes. A unique feature of The Optimist is that guests have the ability to actually choose their steak or fish by weight from the daily blackboards, and then watch the grill master cook it to perfection.
Naturally, the street-level bar is our favorite section of the venue, and it whips up stunning selections inspired by Spain, including an obligatory (and quite gorgeous) range of gin and tonics served in goblets. The bar also presents an impressive line of signatures like the Black Heart (premium rum, muddled fig, creme de cassis, lime, and sugar) and Martinica (premium gin, Italian aperitif, basil, lemon, vanilla, and apple juice), swizzles & juleps (think brambles and mojitos), and stunning sharing punches. All the classics are poured with expert precision as well, in addition to a fine selection of wine, spirits, and beer. Credit Photo: https://www.facebook.com/theoptimisthk/photos
