Hong Kong-Sai Ying Pun

Feb 26, 2020

The famous Bali club’s Hong Kong outpost brings a tropical vibe to the city’s trendy Sai Ying Pun neighborhood.

Potato Head Hong Kong is the second overseas venue of the Indonesian-based hospitality and lifestyle group Potato Head Family, known for its innovative and beautifully designed concepts (among which world-famous Potato Head Beach Club, Potato Head Folk in Singapore, and Katamama hotel in Bali). Bringing the brand’s original vision and warm sense of hospitality to Hong Kong, the 8,000-square-foot multipurpose space designed by star architect Sou Fujimoto houses a diverse programme of cultural events as well as retail and dining concepts.

The airy, tropical-inspired Eksotika bar is vibrant and welcoming, with vintage 1960s-style wooden furniture, Indonesian antiques and an abundance of plants decorating the space. Offering a culinary journey around the archipelago, Indonesian restaurant Kaum is decked with over 700 hand-painted wood panels from a village in Sulawesi. Finally, accessible through three different concealed entrances, the chic Music Room is a vinyl lover’s paradise. Hosting a vast and sharp collection of thousands of records, it provides audiophiles with a top-notch listening experience thanks to wood paneling, solid sound-proofing, and massive JBL 4350 speakers. Stop by for a chill listening sesh, and stay for a late-night dance party. With regular events curated by a roster of local and international DJs, the parties are quick to be sold out.

Back at the bar, tropical cocktails created with bar legend Dre Masso bring a bit of Bali to Hong Kong by blending exotic ingredients with premium spirits. Come by for the Monday to Friday Sundown Hour and try out one (or a few) of their specialties such as the Tropics Old Fashioned, made with coconut fat-washed bourbon, roast pineapple skin syrup and turmeric bitters, stirred and served over ice, or the Missionaries Downfall, with gin, almond, peach, mint, fermented honey and lime. Up for a delicious challenge? Go for Potato Head favorite Barong Zombie, made with Nusa Caña and Havana Club 3 year old rum, pineapple arak, falernum, cherry liqueur, a splash of absinthe, coconut, sugarcane and pineapple juices, passion fruit and a dash of bitters – only 2 allowed per visit.
