Hong Kong-West Kowloon

What do you get when you take an American neighbourhood dive bar, pick it up, and move it all the way to Hong Kong? Sadly, you aren’t legally allowed to do that, but luckily, going to newly opened The Pontiac is the next best thing. Inspired by taverns on corners in big city America with buzzing neon signs out front and famous for being home to a wide spectrum of clientele, hardly any frills, and a massive jukebox selection, The Pontiac manages to capture this quintessentially American atmosphere perfectly. Throw in the fact that the drinks are mixed by a fun and rowdy bunch all the while doing their best Coyote Ugly impression and you’ve got something truly unique in Hong Kong. Dive bars are often ironically visited by hipsters, but there is nothing ironic about the quality – and creativity – of the drinks on offer at The Pontiac. Each one is crafted using the highest quality of ingredients but manages to still be approachable, much like the bar itself. Take for example the Heisenberg, a blue curaçao and gin-infused slush puppy with a dash of absinthe that takes its name and its color from the show Breaking Bad. The Hobnail puts a new twist on the Old Fashioned mixing ginger with scotch, herbal liqueur, lemon, orange oil, and bitters. And if you have missed jello shots since your last trip to the States – or since college – they have you covered there too.
