Whisky & Words
Certified World's Best Bar
- Night Out
Feb 19, 2020
The whisky bar and the speakeasy have become staples of Hong Kong’s nightlife. And while Whisky & Words ticks many boxes – hidden behind a big wooden door, the bar’s sleek, modern interior is intimate and dimly lit, with vintage travel books lining the walls – a few things set it apart from its counterparts.
For starters, the playlist. You won’t hear any old school jazz here, but hip hop music and R&B. The modern music selection reflects the kind of laid-back atmosphere the bar’s founders wanted to create. The expert friendly staff shares its passion for whisky in a casual and unpretentious manner – a refreshing departure from what we’ve come to expect in Hong Kong’s whisky circuit – , making for an approachable whisky bar that’s just as welcoming to the whisky curious rookie than to the veteran whisky lover.
More than just a bar, Whisky & Words seeks to be an open space for education making the art of whisky tasting more accessible. It is also a champion for women in the industry: while it’s not everywhere that you can attend a female-led whisky masterclass, it is a regular occurrence at this bar that regularly invites women experts and star female guest bartenders.
As expected, the whisky selection doesn’t disappoint, with 300 labels from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, the USA, Canada and beyond, best sampled around a skillfully paired whisky flight tray. The cocktail menu features whisky cocktails with a twist, such as the Auspicious, with 12 year-old Aberlour, egg white, fresh ginger, cinnamon syrup, orgeat and lemon juice, and the Coffee Old Fashioned, starring bourbon infused overnight with coffee beans from Mexico and Colombia. And for the non-whisky lovers in your crew, the bar also offers other house creations like Dr Dre, a reinvented gin and tonic with rose orgeat syrup, citrus and green apple. Happy hour goes from 5PM to 8PM on selected drinks.
