Taking its name from Chowringhee Road, which is one of Kolkata’s most fashionable streets – and the thoroughfare the bar happens to be located on – Chowringhee Bar exudes timeless charm from yesteryear with every drink it pours. The Chowringhee Bar experience goes hand-in-hand with that of the hotel it is located in: The Oberoi Grand. Known as the ‘Grand Dame of Kolkata’, the illustrious Oberoi Grand has held sway in the city since the early part of the 20th Century, welcoming heads of state and celebrities along the way, and boasting sumptuous accommodation and meticulously manicured gardens.
After a day doing business or seeing the fascinating sights that Kolkata is famous for, there is nothing better than retreating back to the hotel and escaping to another time and place by having a drink at the Chowringhee Bar. Upon entering the bar, you’ll find plush leather bar stools propped up against a slick marble bartop, sitting atop elegant wooden floor tiles. Artifacts from a bygone era line the walls, including renderings of distinguished British gentlemen who were stationed in India, and even a vintage snooker table thrown in to complete the effect. Naturally, martinis and other classic cocktails are a speciality here, and we can think of no better cocktail to pair with the bar.
