The Bar Kinugawa

Offering a genuine slice of Japanese cocktail culture in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, The Bar Kinugawa offers an imbibing experience unlike any other in the city. The sign outside simply says ‘The Bar’, and when your drinks are as divine as theirs, we suppose there’s no need to dress things up. Luckily for all of us though, they took the opposite approach to the decor of the venue, which is arranged with the utmost of elegance. We love all the light wood, particularly the strips that have been artfully arranged on the ceiling, as they play off the lush greenery outside and the retro-tastic dark brown leather chairs inside perfectly. The bar is lit by a series of modern tubular lights above, showering heavenly light on the drinks that come across its threshold. The venue was founded by a renowned Japanese mixologist – one who has a reputation for craftsmanship – and we are pleased to report that they do all the little things right here, from hand-sculpting ice to order to only using filtered waters and fresh juices in their drinks. These little touches result in splendid cocktails like the light and refreshing Hanabi (premium gin, lychee liqueur, blue curaçao, and lemon & pineapple juice) or the Horse’s Neck, which features whisky, cognac, and a spectacular snaking lemon peel for garnish. Martinis and all the classics are a work of art here too, as is the already-famous frozen beer, which is a traditional Japanese lager topped with slushy foam. If you get hungry there’s smoked seafood on offer that has been flown in from Japan and then smoked in-house, and it doesn’t get any more authentic than that.
