Herbs & Rye
May 11, 2018
A secret among the service industry in Las Vegas for years, the word has finally gotten out about Herbs & Rye – easily one of the finest cocktail bars in all of Las Vegas. Unlike the sparkling drinking dens hidden inside the city’s cavernous casinos or the ones placed high on rooftop perches overlooking twinkling lights, Herbs & Rye resides off The Strip. It’s about a ten minute cab ride to Herbs & Rye to be precise, and when you arrive, you will have truly left the glitz of The Strip behind, trading it in for an authentic slice of old school Vegas.
But first, remember what they say about not judging a book by its cover? Well, keep it in mind as you approach, as Herbs & Rye resides in a fairly nondescript strip mall. Once you cross through the door though, you are surrounded by vintage Vegas swankiness in the form of black leather booths, polished wood floors, and vibrant red wallpaper.
The drinks run the gamut of imbibing eras, offering an education on the history of the cocktail in the process. The menu starts with drinks from the Gothic Age (think an Original Collins with genever and a Jack Rose featuring apple jack) moves on to the Golden Age (Sours, Fizzes, & a Widow’s Kiss) and Prohibition (a buzzy Bee’s Knees & Scofflaw) and marches right on through Tiki (Zombies & Fogcutters) and on to the Rat Pack (Vesper Martinis). These are, of course, just a the tip of the iceberg, to say nothing of the gourmet food – the steaks are to die for – on offer. All tipples are executed with world class skill, and when the discounts kick in during the two daily happy hours, herbs & Rye fills to the brim with a down-to-earth crowd that truly reflects the city.
