Roast + Conch

Chocolate and cocktails are two of the things we like most in life. How fortunate then that this new Boar Lane bar, the work of the estimable Hotel Chocolat company, has decided to combine the two. The venue itself is a smart contemporary space spread over three levels with bars on the ground floor and the lower ground floor and a shop above. The décor inside takes its cues from the cocoa plantations of the Caribbean, all weathered wood and earthy colours. In marked contrast to this there’s an abundance of glass and brushed metal, with a range of leather booths and banquettes on which to sit and cool light fitting made to look like cocoa beans. A chilled out reggae soundtrack plays in the background. The humble cocoa bean also plays a large part in the drinks list, which is made up of around 30 creative drinks. There are martinis, rum-based drinks and aperitifs, as well as a small range of craft beers and an extensive array of spirits in which rum features prominently. The Rum Rabot Sour, which blends rum, cacao bitters, lime and nutmeg, is a good entry drink, the note of cocoa subtle rather than over-whelming, part of a more complex cocktail. Cocoa also features on the food menu of inventive Anglo-West Indian cuisine. Prices are on the steep side for Leeds, but this place is offering something out of the ordinary.
