Bar Américain at Brasserie Zedel
May 11, 2018
The latest venture from Jeremy King and Chris Corbin – the team behind The Wolseley – has the grand aesthetic of the best French brasseries. The sprawling space, once home to the Atlantic Bar and Grill, has been decked out in an abundance of marble and gilt. A sweeping staircase leads you down from the relatively understated entrance, past the Crazy Coqs cabaret space, to the opulent Bar Américain, a cocktail bar in the classic mode, where you can drink an elegant aperitif or two. The drinks list harks back to the golden age of cocktails: they do a mean martini and an excellent sazerac. We particularly like the Spritz Américain, a mix of champagne, grapefruit liqueur and bitters. All drinks come served with little trays of nibbles. Afterwards you can head on down to the main dining room, where the food is classic and French, simple dishes well executed, and the prices for a room so lavish and so centrally located are admirably easy on the wallet.
