Barrafina Covent Garden
May 11, 2018
While others have come in its wake – including the magnificent Jose – for many Soho’s Barrafina remains one of the best tapas bars in London. A gleaming white space with red bar stools and an inviting stone counter, it’s always buzzing, always busy. The new space in Covent Garden – tucked behind St Martin’s in the Fields not far from the excellent Terroirs – shares the look and feel of the original, and the food is just as delicious. On the liquid side of things, there’s an abundance of cava, beer and wine as well and lots of lovely sherry – go for a glass of the specially selected of aged manzanilla if you a real treat. Invariably someone is slicing some ham. The Barrafina tortilla, one of the best examples you’ll try here or in Spain, is still a glorious thing and if anything the tapas is even more creative, though the focus is still on sourcing superior ingredients. Try the frit Mallorquin (grilled offally bits) or the silky lambs’ kidneys or opt for the perfectly grilled chiperones if you fancy something a little lighter. It doesn’t take reservations so plan accordingly or you may have to wait (it will be worth it though).
