Canela, the charming Portuguese café and bar in the heart of Covent Garden, has had a bit of a makeover. The space has been expanded and smartened up. The previously slightly awkwardly shaped room made less awkward, and decked out with attractive wooden panelling and old radios. It feels lighter and brighter, more of a place to linger now, to idle over a glass of Portuguese wine or one of their divine custard tarts. Alongside the excellent Portuguese wine list, which features a number of intriguing and less well known options, they also serve a range of small plates: bacalhau fritters or squid with chorizo, arroz negro. As in Portugal itself, the fish and seafood dishes are your best bets and a Brazilian influence is evident in some of the dishes. It’s located next to Donmar Warehouse- perfectly situated for a pre-theatre tipple and a bite of something, and friendly service, and character abound. We’re glad to see they’ve kept the deli counter for the lunchtime crowd too.
