Following the success of an earlier pop-up, French Bubbles has opened a permanent site in Covent Garden, a cheese and champagne shop combined with a small bistro where fromage-based dishes are the order of the day. The usual labels are eschewed in favour of artisanal champagnes of every kind. A good selection are available by the glass including a quaffable house champagne for (a very reasonable given the quality) £9 and a complex rosé. The food menu, chalked on the back wall, includes charcuterie and an excellent range of cheeses, all sourced from small suppliers in France. The menu boasts a selection of tartines – we suggest you try the roast peppers and mango chutney, it sounds unusual but it really works – alongside some interesting twists on classic bistro dishes: tempura frogs legs came looking like mini frog lollipops with a wicked Roquefort dipping sauce. The dining area is small but attractive and they hold monthly champagne masterclasses in a room downstairs.
