Below and Hidden is an uber-cool Clerkenwell hangout ucked away underneath hip restaurant Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings.

The clue’s in the name: this uber-cool Clerkenwell hangout is an underground drinking den tucked away underneath hip restaurant Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings. It’s as dark and cosy as the venue upstairs is light and airy, thanks to tapestry-covered walls, and plushy seating in dimly lit comfort. It’s only open on Friday and Saturday night, making it a perfect place to let your hair down at the end of a long week. Cocktails are available by the glass, by the bottle, or even by the Lego head, for anyone looking to channel their inner child. Some of these have a rural spin, like The Rambler’s Collins, which mingles whiskey with lemon, prune and blackcurrant, or the nostalgic Jerumino, which mixes rum, apricot and ginger beer. There’s also a mocktail menu, which includes unusual, creative drinks including a non-alcoholic martini, for anyone looking for a lighter night out. At midnight, Below & Hidden undergoes an impressive transformation. The tapestry-covered walls vanish to reveal glowing LED lights in party-ready colours, while tables are pushed aside to allow for dancing to the bar’s in-house DJs. It’s the perfect place to cut the rug after sampling some of the extensive menu of the restaurant upstairs, but there’s enough fun in store to make it worth seeking out this hidden delight for its own sake.
