This latest venture from the people behind the Queen of Hoxton is part of a growing London scene where feeding one’s mind is as high on the agenda as feeding one’s body. The Book Club is an airy, bare-bricked , warehouse style space on the scuzzier side of Shoreditch where jazz sessions and dance classes are as likely to feature on the bill as DJ nights. The atmosphere is cool and community-minded and the whole enterprise has a slightly deprecating edge that keeps it from feeling too self-satisfied to be bearable. The sprawling ground floor of the large two storey space (formerly known as Home) has corners for ping pong and pool as well as plenty of room for dancing. Wine is served by the carafe and house cocktails are on the money. The place is open from mid morning and the kitchen does a mean breakfast.
