The area between Aldgate and Whitechapel is a bit desolate in the evenings- empty side streets, stray Evening Standards billowing along the pavements. But this makes the reward all the sweeter once you discover the street-level doorway, tread down a dark staircase and enter through a black curtain to find a rare diamond of a bar. This subterranean haven has been flying just under the radar since it opened and quietly, confidently doing its thing. Simply: this place is brilliant. And, on the condition that I don’t get squeezed out of my new favourite bar, you should go. DSC is small in size but big in atmosphere. Even on this midweek visit, it glowed and buzzed with sounds of Motown and chattering punters. Mismatching antique furniture and cushions and exposed beams (which we’re told took 8 hours each to strip!) add genuinely authentic character. Right down to the detail of the jagged-edged menus trimmed with tailor scissors, to the perfectly clear and shaped ice cubes, it’s clear Discount Suit Co. is cut from the right cloth. The bar is the product of a team of drinks insiders, including Andy Kerr from The Columbo Group- who has as much knowledge as passion and treats visitors as he would house guests. It makes for that effortless, familiar feel. The menu consists of DSC’s takes on ß-Forgotten Classicsß- and their own unique specials. All served short, these are drinks to savour and consider carefully. The Pan-American Clipper is a stand-out success: a heady, aromatic tour de force of star anise and absinthe- it’s deliciously sweet and dry. The Subtle Peat’s lemon bitters cut through its smooth and smokey tones. But there’s one more string to the bar’s bow that you won’t find on the menu. Ask after the White Negroni. Andy brought with him to DSC a barrel which now contains the 4-week aged cocktail. It’s sweet, clean and crisp with a robust earthy aftertaste: a barrel-aged success. Cool and quality, Discount Suit Co. is the perfect fit.
