London-City and East London
May 11, 2018
Since it opened, this east London steak-and-cocktail nirvana has spawned two further branches in Covent Garden and the City, but the Spitalfields original is where it all began. While the cow still dominates, they’ve expanded the menu to include new classics like the kimchee burger and what’s reputedly the best lobster roll in town. Cocktails have also long been part of their appeal and they’ve acknowledged this by creating a new 60-cover bar area full of cosy nooks and reclaimed mirrors. The cocktail list changes regularly but Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew is a classic in the making. Bar food is as rib-sticking as you’d expect from the Hawksmoor crew, all chilli cheese dogs and umami burgers.
What their peers say
“Hawksmoor – like an ex-girlfriend I am still mildly attracted to and partially in love with. Usually after a stint on the road in foreign climes I return desperate for one of their wonderful steaks and the equally good cocktails. The bar is now looked after by the effortlessly skillful “Shaky” Pete Jeary and under his stewardship the cocktails continue to be extraordinary.” Nick Strangeway of Strange Hill
