Up above the streets and houses of south London the Hong Kong restaurant group Aqua has taken over the 31st and 33rd floors of the Shard. On the 33rd floor you’ll find Hutong, a contemporary Chinese restaurant modelled on the Hong Kong restaurant of the same name. The HK original in a shiny, high-end establishment a favourite with expats and tourists. The London branch is equally glitzy, the interior a gleaming mix of plate glass, wood and traditional Beijing décor. The menu is also the same, favouring Sichuan and northern Chinese dishes packed full of chilli and sichuan pepper. There’s some superb cooking going on here, dishes rich with spice, and there’s also an adventurous wine list to go with it. Start your night with a cocktail in the bar while soaking up that spectacular view (those with vertigo might want to avoid the tables smack bang next to the glass). From here you can see across the whole of the City, the Thames  a silver line below – it’s a pretty epic sight. The food here is worth a visit in its own right though, complex and well-constructed dishes (the Red Lantern crab is a must try). To say prices are steep is something of an understatement, this is not a cheap place by any standards but the combination of creative cooking and some of the best views in the capital means its more than worth it, particularly if you have something special to celebrate.
