This lively new spot near Old Street boasts an interior which feels like a work in progress in the best possible sense and a real sense of welcome. There are plans to let local artists loose on the cherry red brick walls and we get a sense the look of the place will evolve over time in interesting ways. A short but cracking drinks list includes a number of inventive creations, with unusual flavour pairings a recurring feature. Cocktails include the Oliver Twist, a mix of gin, fresh lemon, lemon marmalade and olive brine, the Jack Sparrow a heady blend of rum, Aperol, amaretto and Angostura Bitters, served straight and the warming For Thorns, which melds bourbon, honey, ginger and wheat beer house syrup. A mezcal-laced Bloody Maria comes with a bacon salt rim (hmm, bacon salt). There’s a kind of endearing chaotic atmosphere to the two level space and while it lacks the whimsical gimmickry of nearby bars like Callooh Callay and the Nightjar it makes up for this in good cheer. Drinks are simply presented but made with care and the convivial nature of the place is really appealing.
