Great food
Sager and Wilde
London-City and East London

This pop-up made permanent in London’s east end is the kind of wine bar everyone wants in their neighbourhood. Located on a somewhat scruffy stretch of the Hackney Road, Michael and Charlotte Sager-Wilde’s new venue is friendly, welcoming, laid-back and stylish without being aggressively hip. The room is light-filled and white walled, the space simple in design apart from a bar made of glass bricks. Their wine is well-chosen and very reasonably priced. Food is all kinds of yum. The house red house red is clean tasting and easy drinking, the prosecco delicate and gently effervescent. The selection changes frequently and the range available by the glass is particularly inventive and unusual. A choice of filtered still or sparkling water is offered on arrival and the staff’s passion for their product is evident. They’ll happily give you notes on all the wines available. There’s a short list of vermouths, beer and dessert wine for those who want it and you’ll want to make belly space for their oozing grilled cheese sandwich. A small selection of other tasty bar snacks mainly charcuterie and cheese – are available that pair well with the vino. All in all a great place to lose a couple of hours savouring a glass of something full-bodied and French. [ Photography by John Carey ]
