St John Bread and Wine
London-City and East London

Fergus Henderson’s St John restaurant in Smithfield is justifiably regarded as one of the best in the world, the pioneering home of nose-to-tail eating. This Commercial Street offshoot, opposite Spitalfields market, is equally memorable, if more informal and friendlier on the wallet. Food is still geared towards unfamiliar animal parts and the décor has the same minimal aesthetic, all whitewashed walls and simple wooden tables and chairs. However this place, pitched midway between bar and restaurant, is better geared to casual snacking and imbibing, sharing food and drink with friends. Order a bottle from the considerable French-leaning wine list and chase it down with some duck livers, smoked sprats, or just some achingly good bread baked on site.
