The Clove Club is the work of Isaac McHale, who along with Ben Greeno and James Lowe was one of the Young Turks behind the universally acclaimed Upstairs at the Ten Bells residency. His new solo project is located in a wing of the grand Shoreditch Town Hall and has something of a New York vibe about it. It’s hip and it knows it, but the food is of such a standard that it gets away with it. Drinks-wise, the Clove Club offers a short list of classically inspired cocktails made by artfully bearded bar tenders. Their vodka-based Gimlet is laced with a homemade herbal liqueur while their Clove Club Spirit, blends Aperol, Punt y Mes and wine, the perfect aperitif. Diners can either go for the elaborate tasting menu or go a la carte in the more informal bar area. Dishes are divided into cold and hot, the former including smacked cucumber salad and sea bream served raw with blood orange. The latter category features pork with broccoli and pickled walnuts and some glorious wood pigeon sausages. Their buttermilk fried chicken with pine has rapidly become a must-order dish. There’s only one dessert on the menu at the moment, a chocolate éclair, but it’s a perfect specimen. The atmosphere is chilled out and relaxed, yet stylish with it, and the crowd clearly know that they’re on to a good thing.
