The glamorous One Aldwych hotel, located on the cusp of Covent Garden, not only houses two stylish restaurants but also an attractive and airy Lobby Bar which is worth a visit in its own right. The double-height space boasts large arched windows, dramatic floral displays and some striking sculptures, the most distinctive of which is a large figure perched in a small boat, oars askew. The extensive drinks list features a long list of premium spirits, wines and champagnes alongside a wide array of cocktails. Of these, a raspberry and elderflower bellini was beautiful presented, a striated thing full of crimson fruit, while a seasonal vodka and lychee concoction was delicate and refreshing. Though our Apple Martini suffered a little from an excess of elderflower cordial, which drowned out the other flavours, this was the only blip on the drinks front. Our favourite by far was the One Spritzer, a blend of home-made raspberry and rhubarb syrup, aromatic bitters and champagne, served scarlet and smoking in a glass flask, a theatrical flourish we really enjoyed. We’re already planning a return trip to try their Salted Caramel Martini. The short food menu includes beetroot-cured salmon, Dorset crab toasts and other snacks prettily presented on wooden boards and ideal for sharing. The staff are attentive, friendly and happy to provide cocktail recommendations should you need one. The lighting, just that little bit too bright, means you never entirely forget you’re in a hotel lobby but as its one of the smartest of such spaces in London this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
