The Sun Tavern is housed in a handsome 1850’s corner house in Bethnal Green.

The Sun Tavern is housed in a handsome 1850’s corner house in Bethnal Green. The old Victorian boozer has been converted into a hip all day craft beer and cocktail spot by the chaps behind the similarly cool Discount Suit Company, an atmospheric east London basement bar based in an old tailor’s stock room. It’s a large, airy space, all bare-brick and flaking paint, properly character-rich. The bar offers a range of well-crafted liquid things as well as a top-notch selection of Irish whiskies – and Poitin, a traditional Irish distilled beverage, once popular as a type of moonshine. Cocktails – served in tankards – include The Bogcutter, a blend of the aforementioned Poitin, Apricot Brandy, Amontillado Sherry, Lemon, Honey Water and Ginger. There’s also a potent house punch designed for four people to share. As if that weren’t enough their range of locally brewed craft beers (Beavertown, Partizan, Pressure Drop) is one of the best around. On the food-front, expect a menu of homemade pork pies, scotch eggs and superior grilled sandwiches, the latter made with bread sourced from the best East London bakeries. It’s that kind of place.
