Smiths Of Smithfield
May 11, 2018
This four-floored bar and restaurant complex near to historic Smithfield Market, and owned by John Torode, one half of the Masterchef duo, is an undeniably impressive space. The ground floor houses a lively bar and brunch spot, the third floor a handsome dining area, and the top floor a smart rooftop restaurant with a terrace. But it’s the attractively revamped first floor cocktail lounge that really piques our interest, a large loft-like space complete with sandblasted brickwork, original timber flooring and bespoke leather armchairs. The new cocktail list includes inventive creations like the Perfidious Albion, a tart mix of gin, ginseng spirit and home-made lemon cordial, the Gaby a short, sharp blend of rye vodka, Lillet Rose, home-made pomegranate reduction, and champagne. The aromatic Don Hibisco pairs white tequila infused with hibiscus flowers with home-made rock candy palm sugar, and the Somerset Garden is already edging ahead as a favourite, a bitter yet subtly sweet mix of Somerset cider brandy, maraschino and homemade lemon cordial with dandelion and burdock essence. Alongside this there’s a huge range of whiskies on offer including a sizeable section from Japan and a good array of other premium spirits. Bar snacks include salt cod fritters, arancini, and the by now ubiquitous sliders. The space is relaxed and welcoming by the day but things step up a gear in the evening when the lights get lower and the music louder.
