The Cocktail Trading Company is the brainchild of Andy Milz, Olly Brading and Elliot Ball, three guys who’ve racked up a lot of mixology and bar consultancy experience between them. Born out of a love of good drinks and the industry as a whole, their new project combines a number of elements. A bar and table where they can experiment with flavours and presentation, a school for teaching mixology skills and a cocktail shop where you can pick up cocktail paraphernalia. The bar part of the operation, located in a funky basement space on Great Malborough Street in Soho, serves variations on classic American drinks as well as wittily presented contemporary concoctions. The Welcome To Kentucky, Have a Nice Day is a case in point, blending Jim Beam with ginger, plum, yuzu and matcha, it comes served in a Chinese take-out carton and other drinks arrive in cans and plant pots. One even comes in a miniature wellie. There’s some seriously skilful mixology on display here, no doubt, and the room is handsome, but the abiding sense is one of fun – creativity combined with a willingness to play. And this playfulness is only underlined by the tunes and the mood of the bar.
