Inspired by 1920s glamour and sophistication and located right on The Strand, Good Godfrey’s is the perfect spot for a post-theatre drink or a cozy late afternoon rendezvous.
Named after Howard Godfrey, the former leader of the Waldorf House band, the Waldorf Hilton’s bar is dark and cozy, with deep oak paneling and a mean jazz playlist that evokes the classy 1920s. During the day, you’ll find a lively buzz of hotel guests and locals enjoying breakfast and lunch, but the swanky lounge truly comes alive after dark.
The bartenders, aptly named “drink slingers”, serve up a menu filled with vintage gems, old time classics revisited with a twist, and original creations. Delight yourself on a perfectly executed French 75, an old but timeless mix of gin, fresh lemon juice and champagne. Looking to sample a house signature? Treat yourself to a Godfrey’s Cobbler, a smart mix of a wine-based Byhrr aperitif, fresh lime juice, vanilla liqueur and maple syrup. An interesting drink that is far less overpowering than you might think, and as enjoyable as the best dessert on the menu.
The helpful staff and skilled bartenders only add to the ambience, and after a couple of hours, you’ll feel so at home that you might even forget the time – or era, for that matter. This is the perfect example why good bars do not have to be overly modern or reinvent their concept every year to be relevant. There will always be room in our hearts for storied classics, old school charm and finely tuned mixology, assets that the Good Godfrey has in spades.
You might end up coming back more often than you think. After all, the Good Godfrey is perfect for any occasion, and dare we say at any time of the day. If, however, you wish to replicate their perfect drinks at home to impress your clique, cocktail masterclasses are also available – the perfect gift for any mixology lover.
