Harrild and Sons

Harrild and Sons is the latest venue from the team behind the Well & Bucket pub in Bethnal Green, the traditional Farringdon Street boozer updated with an abundance of copper piping, wood panelling, black banquette seating, ornate mirrors and the ubiquitous filament bulbs. They stock a good array of craft beers and the vibe is suitably lively and pub-like. Downstairs, as with their other branches, it’s a different story. The 5CC cocktail club is more sophisticated a space, dark as a cave, elegant and atmospheric. Cocktails are potent and classic, the drinks list including things like the Vieux Carre, that reliable mix of rye, cognac and vermouth, and the Rimbaud’s Left Hand, a charged combo of absinthe, egg white, and pineapple. They also hold a big selection of rare and unusual whiskies from around the world, for those evenings (or indeed afternoons) when you’re feeling in a Don Draper kind of mood. The food menu is also more than a cut above and well worth exploring, boasting tempting dishes like grilled lobster and veal schnitzel Holstein alongside popcorn shrimp salad and a superior house burger, a combination that seems to keep the City crowd more than happy.
