Hawksmoor Air Street
May 11, 2018
The fourth branch of rightly acclaimed Hawksmoor after Seven Dials, Spitalfields and Guildhall is their biggest yet, a handsome 235-cover space just off Regent Street. Their ambition is further evident in the menu, which has been expanded to feature a wide selection of fish dishes alongside the dazzling array of steaks with which they’ve made their name. The new venue is handsome, albeit in a masculine and understated way, with a glorious curving green marble staircase sweeping up to the 55-seater cocktail bar.
The lighting is warm and low; there are acres of parquet, green leather bar stools, and many elegant art deco touches. The cocktail menu is stranded into different times of day, from ‘anti-fogmatics,’ designed to open the eyes and clear your head, to fruity ‘disco drinks’ and soothing post-prandial cocktails (including perhaps the best Espresso Martini we’ve ever had, made with home-made coffee liqueur and full of the bite of coffee beans). Fans of the famous Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew will be happy to see it’s still there on the menu but their signature Air Street Cocktail, designed by Rachael Naylor, is just as delicious, a delicate mix of strawberry-infused vermouth, champagne and cucumber. Other highlights include a Shipwreck Sour, made with cask-aged Somerset cider brandy, and Full Fat Old Fashioned, made with butter-infused bourbon, perhaps the quintessential Hawksmoor drink.
A bar food menu is in the planning stages and – judging by the beaming, sated faces of those drifting out of the dining room this can’t happen soon enough.
