J.Sheekey Oyster Bar
May 11, 2018
J.Sheekey’s, the favoured dining spot of West End thesps, is something of an institution and the neighbouring oyster bar, opened in 2008, is rapidly acquiring the same reputation. The handsome space, with its black and white photographs of famous faces and old school elegance, has been expanded to include more booth seating but the best perch is at the horseshoe-shaped bar itself. Here you choose from a range of tasty bivalves and pair them with a glass or two of crisp fizz. Their seafood is impeccably sourced and they also offer a range of fish dishes (a curtailed version of the menu next door). If you’re in the mood for a real treat, the decadent iced platters of fresh fruits de mer are gloriously good. There are razor clams with smoked chorizo, tempura squid, chargrilled octopus, crab bisque, scallops in the half shell and a half lobster, served with rich mayonnaise. The rightly famous J Sheekey’s fish pie is also an option. The wine list is gratifyingly thick and varied, with a few reasonable options among the big hitters. Service is smooth as silk and informative with it. Can there be a better prologue to a night at the theatre than an hour spent perched on a soft leather bar stool sipping a flute of champagne and swallowing just-shucked oysters with one eye on the door in case Michael Gambon or Judi Dench stop by before curtain up?
