Churchill Bar and Terrace
May 11, 2018
The otherwise faintly anonymous Hyatt Regency hotel, just off Oxford Street, is now the home of a glamorous bar designed as homage to one of the country’s most iconic political figures, Winston Churchill. It’s a glamorous space that evokes the history of an age without resorting to gimmickery. A life-size bronze statue of the great man sits outside on one of the terrace chairs and you can share a table with him if you wish. Inside the bar Churchill’s letters are framed on the wall and his doodles adorn the menus. The décor of the Churchill Bar and Terrace is polished and elegant with plenty of stylish art deco touches. There’s an abundance of inviting high-backed armchairs into which to sink with a gin and a small library with books supplied by Daunt featuring books that a young Churchill would have read and cute stuffed animals doubling as bookends (something Churchill was fond of doing at Chartwell). The drinks menu is as well thought out as the space, featuring a range of long gin drinks, made using homemade tonics (the Blueberry and Rosehip Sling is both delicious and refreshing) as well as a range of hot cocktails suitable for chilly London evenings. A limited bar menu includes some of Churchill’s favourites, including smoked salmon and beef wellington. The quail scotch eggs are excellent and the whole venue gives off an air of British grace and elegance which is very winning indeed.
