Cicchetti Bar at Piccolino
May 11, 2018
This small but perfectly formed London bar offers creative cocktails, an interesting wine list and a feast of tasty Venetian tapas. It’s fitting for a luxe, bijou venue that takes its name from the small and savoury snacks that are ubiquitous in Venice’s ‘bacari’ or bars.
Many of the finest Cicchetti are on offer here, and the small servings mean you get to pile many of them onto your plate at once. Arancini Bolognese balls – deep-fried, breadcrumb laden risotto balls, stuffed with mozzarella beef ragu and peas – are a favourite as are the chicken skewers, brasato and the house pizza. All of them can be paired with original Cicchetti cocktails like the refreshing citrus and sherry blend, ‘Bamboo’ and a fine wine list available by the glass or by the bottle.
The lavish décor also pays homage to Cicchetti’s Italian roots, from the elegant spiral staircase to the vaulted ceilings and ample use of marble and mosaic flooring. It’s clearly more design-led than your average basement bar; chic leather stools, angular mirrors and carefully crafted lighting complete the work of the architecture in creating a stylish space that’s also fun and inviting. On weekends, there’s a live DJ perfectly selected to underscore the cool of this place.
The laid-back ambience never gets too frenetic so it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends for a relaxing night out or as a much-needed oasis of calm from the bustling West End shopping streets nearby.
Come summertime, you might be tempted to emerge from the underground and savour your bar snacks al fresco, sipping on one of the house cocktails on the expansive terrace.
