El Pirata is a stylish and attractive tapas bar in the heart of Mayfair. It’s a tasteful space with black awnings and colourful wall art. There’s no need to perch at barrels or eat standing up as you do at some of the city’s hipper tapas joints, here it’s a smart, sit-down affair. There’s a small mirrored bar at the front where you can perch with a drink or two whilst sampling some tapas and a larger main dining space spread over two floors. There’s even pavement seating, ideal for those (all too rare) warm summer evenings. The atmosphere is convivial and the food is superb. They serve excellent croquetas and great plates of jamón Serrano alongside a selection of heartier dishes from Northern Spain. There’s a strong Spanish wine list and the well-stocked bar boasts a wide array sherries, beers and spirits.
