The Blues Kitchen is a sliver of the Deep South in North London. The venue couldn’t give two hoots about the latest fads and fashions and instead resounds to the sound of old fashioned rhythm and blues. It’s a suitably dark and moody space, full of plump leather armchairs and little rickety tables, with faded posters on the walls.
The ideal setting in fact to settle down with a glass of something smooth and enjoy the music. The tunes are taken very seriously here: blues, soul, and proper rock’n’roll. Customers come because they like what they hear and they want some respite from the bland and the commonplace. As a result they’re a pleasingly eclectic bunch, a mix of ages and incomes, students and musos.
They serve a wide range of scotch, bourbons and ryes as well as some classic cocktails (try the mint julep) and the kitchen dishes up hearty Southern fare: jambalaya, BBQ, po’boys and the like, lovely rib-sticking stuff. Their vast American breakfasts are deliciously decadent and their Sunday house band is worth catching for a chilled afternoon after the night before.
