London-North and Northwest London

Though located near one of the city’s major commuter hubs, at the Great Northern Hotel at King’s Cross, the GNH bar feels like more than just a stop-off spot for weary travellers; it’s well worth a visit in its own right. Despite being mere metres from the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International, it’s hidden behind frosted glass windows and well insulated from the rush hour bustle; inside, you’ll find an attractive elegant room with chequerboard tiled floors and glittering chandeliers. Open from 7am, it makes the perfect stylish spot to enjoy a glass of fizz or a cocktail before hopping on the train to Paris. Cocktails are reasonably priced and include the Oriental Express (see what they did there), a light, refreshing mix of vodka, red chilli and lychee, the fruity Victorian Rouge, a sweet blend of pureed raspberries shaken with Amaretto and Chambord, and the cardamom-laced 1854 (the year in which the hotel was built). The menu includes a range of classic cocktails including a number of champagne-based tipples, ideal of kicking off a romantic weekend. A small range of salads, sandwiches and bar snacks are served if you need a more substantial pick-me-up, but, like the great railway bars of old, this place works best as a rendezvous before boarding, the first step in a journey.
