The Hansom
London-Saint Pancras
Feb 26, 2020
Located within the magnificent St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, in a neighborhood that’s steadily been growing in dynamism and popularity, this vibrant bar alone would be worth the train ride. Standing on what once was the cobbled driveway leading in to King’s Cross station, The Hansom makes the most of its location’s spectacular Victorian Gothic architecture.
The original high-vaulted glass ceiling and monumental windows bathe the space in natural light, and the interior has been carefully refreshed with modern flair.
Flanked by large potted plants, plush armchairs let you comfortably take in the beauty of this brick and steel cathedral, complete with an organ-like bar at its center. The focal point of the venue, its contemporary brass mesh backdrop and glossy marble-topped counter are lit from within, enveloping their surroundings in a warm golden glow.
The Hansom is buzzing with life throughout the day, from breakfast and afternoon tea to after work and evening drinks. Upgrading tradition with a modern twist, everything about this bar is resolutely British, right down to the craft cocktails. The drinks menu offers a range of unique creations inspired by 18th and 19th century classics, split between two sections: The Hansom Classics and The Hackney Classics.
From the latter, Bethnal Green Around The Gills is a definite must-try. This delicate riff on the timeless Corpse Reviver No.2 is composed of green tea infused Monkey 47 gin, Crémant d’Alsace sparkling wine, clarified lemon juice, St Germain, Lillet Blanc, absinthe, Suze and egg whites, resulting in a verdant and smooth pick-me-up. Another favorite is the bitter and elegant Orchard Negroni, a White Negroni where the Suze, Lillet Blanc and Beefeater gin have been aged in peach and perry soaked oak.
To soak it all up, do indulge in the addictive, modern-classic British bites on offer. The Scotch Egg (with a choice of haggis, pork and fennel, salt cod or falafel), Crispy Salt & Pepper Popcorn Cockles and Cornish Crab Cakes with saffron and garlic mayonnaise are a must.
