214 Bermondsey: No pretence, just gin.
The bar is decked in wooden boarding throughout, with small wooden tables for a snug catch up with friends and red leather stools where you can sit to educate yourself in all things gin from the passionate bartenders. There is little other decoration in the bar, so as not to detract from their main focus: the gin selection, shelved on the mirrored wall behind the bar.
We like gin, but we love a good cocktail and 214 has an excellent choice selection. The Kiwi Gimlet spins a classic recipe with kiwi cordial and lime juice for a sweet tang, where the sweet Charlie Chaplin shakes sloe gin with raspberry liqueur and apricot. Our favourite is the SEI Sour, gin replacing the usual amaretto or whisky base, with a fresh fig syrup.
Save your 214 Bermondsey experience for a Social Sunday, where from 4pm to 10.30pm there are deals on cocktails, gin and tonic and gin sharing platters. The star of Social Sundays is the ‘Orient Express’ gin flight, with three mini G&Ts based on three different gins: Colombo, Start of Bombay and Opihr. The bar also offers a selection of pastas if you are feeling nibbly, cuttlefish and squid ink risotto for the bold. But the genius lies in their sourdough focaccia from the grazing board (and maybe go a little wild and throw their cheese selection in there too!).
