Thought to be the city’s oldest wine bar, established in 1890, Gordon’s wine bar is a London institution.

Tucked away in a hidden space near Embankment, a narrow set of stairs will take you down into this vault of antique chic. The flickering candles set the ambience as cosy yet sophisticated, with the air of romance basking from the candlelit stone railway arch walls. The perfect place for an intimate romantic night or a night of wine with friends. Gordon’s simply oozes character and charm, with the well-worn antique furniture and walls adorned with black and white pictures. The epitome of shabby chic. For a breath of fresh air there is even an outdoor patio area to relax in.

The selection of wines and cosy atmosphere attracts a truly eclectic crowd, with everyone from young professionals in designer suits, to artists and musicians gracing the underground winery. It is easy to see why crowds of Londoners flock to this still family-run bar. The atmosphere is inviting; the staff infinitely knowledgeable, many having worked there for many, many years, and then there’s the wine. Oh, so much great wine. The expansive wine list covers everything from full-bodied red wines, to crisp, refreshing whites, at prices that won’t break the bank. With premium champagnes lining the shelves and fortified wines stored in casks behind the bar, there really is something for everyone. The perfect complement to this delicious hand-picked wine selection is the bar’s selection of food and light bites. All incredibly reasonably priced, Gordon’s serves up a variety of cold plates, cheese platters and hot plates. The exact nature of the menu items depends on the fresh local produce acquired by the chef that week. Why not head over on a Sunday for a glass of wine and a sumptuous roast dinner? This bar will quickly become a firm favourite.
