Gordon's Wine Bar
London-South East London
May 11, 2018
The phrase shabby chic springs to mind. It’s not much to look out from the outside, but this hidden space near Embankment station is many a Londoner’s favorite wine bar for good reason. From the street you descend down a narrow flight of stairs to a time-worn space, dark and inviting, with candlelit tables nestling in the gloom under the railway arches. Full of character, it’s something of an institution. Their wine list is impressive, with a range of fortified wines served from casks behind the bar. Food is available, simple stuff, decent cheese and bread, and if you need a little air (it can get seriously packed in there), head out to the patio area at the back. The crowd is as eclectic and eccentric as the bar, office workers mingling with artist types and the odd in-the-know tourist.
