London-South East London

José Pizarro is the co-founder and former chef of Brindisa, the restaurant group responsible for changing the way most Londoners think about Spanish food and drink. So when he puts his name to a new venture, you know it’s going to be good. Jose, his eponymous Bermondsey bar and restaurant, is the business. The one-room venue, attractively tiled, has an authentic atmosphere. There aren’t that many seats to go around and there’s a no-reservation policy but that’s all part of the appeal. The food here is seriously good, simple but superb tapas made with the best ingredients. There’s a list of sherries to explore, from the sweet stuff through to crispest finos, as well as a decent range of Spanish wines. The menu changes daily, but the meltingly soft Iberico ham and the chorizo in red wine are always a good way to go.
