London-South East London

Located on a meandering backstreet behind Guys Hospital and the newly redeveloped London Bridge station, Texas Joe’s makes no bones about its purpose in life. A big sign outside celebrates the ‘ slow smoked meats’ available within – and you’ll want to celebrate them too. Decked out like a US BBQ shack with rough wood panelling and picnic style tables outside on the pavement, they offer a menu packed with brisket and pulled pork. The former, moist and tender, is hands-down one of the best examples in London. If a mountain of excellent barbecued meat isn’t quite your thing you might well be in the wrong place, fortunately their BBQ tacos (try the mutton tacos, they’re revelatory) and house mac’n’cheese are also superb. Whatever you do don’t miss the hidden cocktail bar reached through an unassuming side door. Here they’re whipping up tasty concoctions that pair well with the majestic meats. They also serve a good range of beers, both local and international. The slightly out-of-the-way location means you’re unlucky to encounter Pitt Cue-style queues as well. Another plus.
