The Anchor and Hope doesn’t look much from the outside. One might easily dismiss it as a drab neighbourhood pub not worth a second look, but that would be foolish, very foolish indeed. This boxy-looking boozer on The Cut is in fact one of the best gastropubs in London and has been hailed as such by numerous bloggers, respected food journalists and Giles Coren. Inside it’s split into two rooms: one for drinking, one for dining, though the former is often crammed with people waiting to make their way into the latter (they don’t take reservations). The food is hearty, unfussy and cooked to perfection: cassoulet, guinea fowl, bacon and snail salad. The bar serves a decent range of ales, some top notch sherries and some good cocktails. Wine comes in rustic tumblers. Finish your meal with a necessary digestif before waddling home full-bellied and happy.
