The Table Cafe
London-South East London
May 11, 2018
The Table is a cracking café-bar tucked away behind the Globe and the Tate Modern on Southwark Street that punches well above its weight on the food front. The room’s not all that exciting. A sleek, contemporary box with sleek contemporary tables at which to sit. But the food – oh my. You’re going to want to try their Cuban pulled-pork sandwich, that’s if you’re not distracted by the delights of the duck confit burger. They do an epic steak sandwich and their vegetarian platter and smoky mushroom burger are far from meat-fee afterthoughts, – order either one of these and you’ll be slapping people’s hands away. Their wine list is well-composed and reasonably priced, including a nice bright Grüner Veltliner, one of our favourite whites. Service is swift and friendly and The Table is becoming particularly popular as a brunch spot, what with their vast hearty Borough breakfast, their famous sweetcorn fritters, and their fluffy but huge buttermilk pancakes – order the bacon and caramalised banana option if you want to go out with a smile on your face. Reservations are only taken Monday-Friday so you may have to queue on weekends, but – trust us – it’ll be worth it.
